SOLIDARITY - CALLING ON ALL WOMEN WORLDWIDE
I came across this project on a random Google search as I was looking for textiles from India. The cuteness of the dolls caught my eye first. The story came second. As I read more about the project, which is using upcycled fabrics to create these handmade wonders by refugees I wanted to read more. It reminded me of my great grandmother who survived TWO World Wars in Hungary. She was born in 1904, lived well into her 90s and whenever I saw her was always cheerful, but sometimes she'd also tell us what it was like when there was no food, when they resorted to eating horse meat and when she would send her four children to pick up coal from the railway tracks that were falling off trains so there was something to heat their home through the cold winters.
This project was created by Silaiwali in collaboration with UNHCR and Made51. If you'd like a fun friend for a little one or want to show solidarity to the amazing women who make them or want a beautifully made textile for your collection these are for you!
